I’ve never liked the idea of carrying a DSLR camera with me. They just seem too big and cumbersome. It’s hard to go unnoticed with them and as soon as you go outside, you become an easy target for thieves.
So for a while now, I’ve been a fan of the semi-professional digital cameras. These combine the portability of the cheap digital cameras with some of the features of the professional ones.
The PowerShot S100 is a powerful and sophisticated yet portable digital camera. It has a fully manual mode, for when you need to set the aperture and exposure yourself and a new processor for white balancing. It also captures videos in full HD and has an ISO sensitivity of 6400 (ideal for nighttime pictures).
The PowerShot S100‘s 7.5 x 5.5 mm sensor is gigantic for such a small camera and it allows you to capture 12-megapixel images in RAW or JPEG format, as no other camera of that size can.
The good
- Incredibly small for its power
- HD video (1920x 1080)
- GPS to geo locate your pictures
The bad
- It’s not a phone
- It’s not manufactured to have interchangeable lenses (although I used to have a S95 and it had a lenses and filters adaptor. There should be one for the S100)
It’s a bit expensive for a portable camera. But the way I see it: my mobile phone is my everyday camera and this is the one I take on trips, or when I want to go out and take pictures, without someone robbing my camera. So, unless you make a living by taking photos, I doubt that you’ll ever need more of what the S100 can give you.
